The Distinction Between Gifts and Relationship
Many people unknowingly seek the blessings or "gifts" of a relationship with God while neglecting to desire the relationship itself. This subtle yet significant issue can manifest in several ways:
- Wants Without Wills: Some desire God’s provision, healing, or protection but are unwilling to surrender to His will or prioritize their connection with Him.
- Blessings Without Bonding: Others seek God’s love, joy, or peace yet fail to invest the time and effort necessary to build a meaningful relationship with Him.
- Results Without Roots: Many wish to enjoy the rewards of faith without committing to the foundational trust, obedience, and dedication that a genuine relationship with God requires.
The Parable of the Seed
Jesus often used parables to illustrate profound spiritual truths. In Matthew 13:1-23, He shared the Parable of the Seed, which provides insight into the connection between God’s Word and our relationship with Him:
- The Seed Represents God’s Word: The seed symbolizes the Word of God, which can produce life-changing fruit in those who truly receive it.
- The Soil Represents the Heart: The soil signifies the condition of an individual’s heart, where the seed takes root.
- The Fruit Represents the Relationship: The fruit reflects the relationship that grows between a person and God when they nurture His Word in their lives.
Through this parable, Jesus reminds us that the fruit (relationship) stems from receiving and cultivating the seed (God’s Word). If we desire the fruit without committing to the process of nurturing the seed, we miss the essence of a true relationship with God.
Jesus’ Invitation
Jesus calls us to a higher priority: "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:33). This is an open invitation to put our relationship with Him above all else. When we do, the blessings (gifts) naturally follow.
Receiving the Gifts
By welcoming God’s presence into our lives, we begin to experience remarkable gifts that flow from a thriving relationship with Him, such as:
- Peace That Surpasses Understanding: Philippians 4:7
- Joy That Is Pure and Inexpressible: 1 Peter 1:8
- Love That Is Unconditional: 1 John 4:8
- Strength That Is Unshakeable: 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
These blessings are not the ultimate goal but rather the natural result of a devoted and authentic relationship with God.
Conclusion
The distinction between seeking God’s gifts and seeking His relationship is a crucial one. Jesus’ invitation to seek His kingdom and righteousness challenges us to put the relationship first. When we do, the gifts and blessings become an overflow of His presence in our lives. Let’s focus on pursuing the relationship, trusting that everything else will follow in His perfect timing.
