The Story of Hannah in the Bible and Its Lesson

Hannah's story, found in the Old Testament

(1 Samuel 1–2), is a powerful example of faith, perseverance, and God’s faithfulness.

Hannah was one of two wives of Elkanah, but unlike the other wife, Peninnah, she was unable to have children. Her barrenness caused her deep sorrow, and Peninnah often mocked her, adding to her pain. Despite this, Hannah turned to God in her distress.

She prayed fervently at the Tabernacle, pouring out her heart to the Lord and making a vow: if God gave her a son, she would dedicate him to His service. God heard her prayer, and in time, she gave birth to a son, Samuel.

True to her promise, Hannah brought Samuel to the Tabernacle once he was weaned, and he went on to become a great prophet and leader of Israel. Hannah’s faith was further reflected in her prayer of thanksgiving (1 Samuel 2:1-10), which exalts God’s power and sovereignty.

The lesson from Hannah’s story is clear: trust in God and remain steadfast in faith, even in difficult times. Her example teaches us the importance of prayer, patience, and surrendering to God’s will. Moreover, it reminds us that God’s plans are often greater than our own, as evidenced by how Samuel’s life impacted the nation of Israel. Like Hannah, we are encouraged to approach God with honesty and humility, trusting that He listens and cares for His people.
